Curious About Microneedling? Find Out What It Is and How To Prepare for Treatment.
You may have heard about microneedling and wonder what it involves, how long it takes to see the results and whether it's worth trying. Well we're here to break down exactly what microneedling is and how you can be on your way to achieving beautiful clear skin in no time.
What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling (otherwise known as collagen induction therapy) is a minimally invasive procedure that uses fine needles to create tiny puncture wounds in the top layer of the skin without damaging surrounding tissue. This stimulates your body's natural ability to repair, which causes new collagen production and elastin growth. The tiny channels also make topical skincare products more effective, so you can get a double power result.
How long does it take to see results from microneedling?
You can expect to see visible results after your first treatment, however for optimum results we recommend having a course of 6 treatments spaced 2-4 weeks apart. This allows you skin to fully recover in between sessions and receive the full benefits from each one.
Can I have microneedling if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
This is something that is best discussed with your GP before starting treatment. Some areas of the body may be better avoided until you've had children and finished breast feeding . Areas like: under the eyes, around the lips and on the neck/decolletage should probably be avoided.
Where can I get microneedling?
Don't worry you can easily have this treatment at home rather than having to book into a clinic. We offer the Dr Pen that comes with everything you need for 6 treatments at home, so no one will be any the wiser! Just pop your starter kit in your handbag and off you go! Or if you'd prefer clinic visits, we also have an amazing range of packages available on our website Dr Pen UK.
Do I have to remove my makeup before treatment?
We advise that prior to microneedling all non-waterproof makeup is removed from the skin. Waterproof mascara rarely comes off properly with just water which can result in dilution of the product and prolong scabbing. So to ensure you get the best possible results, cleansing your face with a gentle cleanser or micellar water is recommended before treatment.
Tips for prepping skin
In order to help make microneedling as easy as possible for you we recommend starting 2-3 weeks prior to treatment by using a Vitamin C serum morning and night. This will help improve the absorption of the needles into your skin during treatment, resulting in better results. We also recommend that you drink plenty of water throughout this time which will hydrate your skin helping it recover more quickly after each session.
What should I expect from microneedling?
A typical microneedling treatment will take about an hour, and your skin will be red for the rest of the day. For most people there is very little discomfort during treatment and we recommend that you continue with your normal daily routine following the treatment. You can apply make-up or go straight back to work as we don't want microneedling to interfere with your busy schedule!
What Can I use my microneedling gadgets on?
The Dr Pen Starter Kit can be used anywhere on the face, body or even scalp giving you a full range of benefits. However when using at home we always recommend seeking advice from a medical professional before trying out new areas of the face such as around the eyes, mouth and neckline. The Dr Pen isn't suitable for use on darker skin types, pregnant women or people with collagen deficiencies.
Can I combine Microneedling with other treatments?
Microneedling is a fantastic treatment that works well alongside many others to enhance results. Popular combination treatments include microneedling with radiofrequency for an instant anti-ageing boost, Fractional CO2 laser for effective scar reduction and stretch mark removal, botox or dermal fillers to reduce wrinkles or treat lines and acne scarring, Microdermabrasion, chemical peels and mesotherapy.
